Goldman Sachs considers a short position in the dollar against the yen the optimal currency hedge in case of a downturn in the AI sector. The bank relies on analysis of past periods of simultaneous stock and bond yield declines.
Goldman Sachs stated that a short position in the dollar against the Japanese yen serves as the most effective currency protection against a possible decline in shares of companies related to artificial intelligence. According to the bank, this assertion is strengthened by the fact that the market has already accounted for the strong connection between the decline in stock quotes and the fall in yields.
At Goldman Sachs they noted that the yen becomes the preferred long position precisely at moments when both stocks and interest rates fall simultaneously. To confirm, the bank’s analysts examined the twenty largest periods of such dual declines since 2000 and compared the behavior of major currency pairs. The yen group showed the best results in these conditions, especially against the dollar.
On the currency market the dollar retreated on Wednesday, but later recouped part of the losses. The reason was the results of the US midterm elections, where Democrats for the first time in a long while gained control of both chambers of Congress. The Democratic victory reduced uncertainty around possible disputed outcomes, but at the same time increased the likelihood of a divided government and legislative deadlock.
Military actions continue in the country in Iran, and the boom in the field of artificial intelligence also persists, simultaneously supporting economic growth and intensifying inflationary pressure. These factors influence investor sentiment and the dynamics of currency pairs.
